Ci vogliono, appunto, molti luoghi.  Viviana Tessitore

FROM THE WIRE TO THE SKY

There are places where it is necessary to slow down in order to arrive at their full understanding.

If it were possible to connect each of our inner places, from one point to another, we could trace paths and sentimental paths to build a real emotional map, made up of loved and hostile places, turning points, and crossroads of doubt and life choices. Each map would thus be able to graphically convey the experiences of each individual.

Drawing a line is drawing the passing of days, clear, sometimes tortuous or syncopated, and drawing a point is to represent a place to which we feel connected and to which we give greater emotional resonance.

We would therefore need skilled hands in “dominating” the line, capable of combining the act of drawing with that of narration. Ilaria Margutti has chosen the thread as the dominant element of her being an artist: research, poetics and practice of doing. This is not an event, Ilaria Margutti (courageously) chose thread as an expressive tool, adopting an (unexpected) practice such as embroidery, in the context of avant-garde art. The thread often replaces the brush and tells stories.

With the thread at her fingertips, Ilaria subverts the normal passing of time, dilates it like the wefts of her fabrics, treats it with care, knots minutes, cotton and words.

And she invites everyone to do it together with her, in an education in “slow speaking” to survive the fast consumption of our messages and face the tragic reduction in communication.

Ilaria Margutti’s artistic residence, invited to Santa Maria degli Angeli by the Fare Cooperative, accompanied the participants on a journey that began by raising one’s eyes to the sky, observing the starry vault and then continued on a guided walk between nature and landscape, to write down the emotional places in our inner notebook. From these experiences a laboratory and an intellectual dialogue was born, led by Ilaria and assisted by skilled hands from the world of thread and needle.

The workshop participants created a work of fabric, plots and stories: a relational work of art that allowed the participants to tell stories by joining their own colored threads. Each individual manual skill has been channeled into a collective and transversal work for all ages, gender identities and all cultures. To expand the artistic action, tourists and passers-by were invited to make their contribution to the great Galactic Web, through a knot, a point, a trace of thread.

The path should therefore be understood as an experience between art and science to be lived and crossed, in which every point, every word and every person has become an indispensable element of the collective narrative that ensued.

“To have any hope of being ourselves, we must have many places within us.” This thought by J.B. Pontalis, masterfully interpreted by Vittorio Lingiardi, in his work Mindscapes. Psyche in the landscape is the repository of two teachings: our history and our psyche are also a geography; we are inseparable from our places, out of love or resentment, and our place is never just one.

It takes, in fact, many places. Viviana Tessitore

Margutti’s is a journey of introspective and identity investigation. Starting from a pictorial style of expressionist derivation, in 2007 she began to use embroidery as a fundamental element of her research, thus becoming the language in which she feels her poetics best represented. A technique full of symbolic meanings on the origins of the feminine and intensely linked to a search for identity, which has its roots in Greek history.

Singular. Patient, acute, ancient and surprising work. A wait that is construction, which is tacit, silent dynamism. Slow. It is embroidery, a very fine and masterful art that is practiced with unspeakable accuracy, that is an unusual technique in the contemporary world.

But for Ilaria Margutti it is much more, it is a process: constructive, cognitive, educational. An evident laborious creative path that, gentle and refined, slowly builds the figure. A different culture of itself that tests itself in its prodigious manifestations that are never complete except in the final evolution. Educational to the silent passing, to the knowledge of one’s own intimacy, vulnerable and strong, decidedly stubborn, in balance or waiting to be. A work within a work, art in art a boundary that arises as the principle of artistic work and the human journey, representative of weaving. A painter, Ilaria, who savors beauty and conquers the awareness of knowing how to read, composing herself according to one’s own needs: no detail is left to chance, every desire is assembled revealing itself now as an empty, simple path to take, and now as significantly filled with a genuine rediscovery of emotions and pure sensations.

The creation of a masterpiece, a window in which to look out to see the world in a different way, investigating oneself with pride. (Francesca Mazzarelli).
